Hamilton, Ontario. And Neighbouring Areas

The G2 test can feel intimidating. It’s the first real road test most drivers face in Ontario, and passing it means gaining more independence behind the wheel. The good news? With the right preparation, you can avoid the most common mistakes and set yourself up for success.

At SteerWise Driving School in Hamilton, we’ve seen hundreds of students go through the G2 exam. Here are the top 5 mistakes students often make — and what you can do differently.

1. Not Checking Blind Spots

Many students rely only on their mirrors. On the G2 test, blind spot checks are non-negotiable. Forgetting even once can cost points or lead to failure.

  • How to avoid it: Make shoulder checks a habit every time you change lanes, merge, or turn. Practice until it feels automatic.

2. Rolling Stops at Stop Signs

Examiners look closely at full stops. Slowing down but not stopping completely is a classic mistake that can instantly fail your test.

  • How to avoid it: Always bring your vehicle to a complete stop — wheels fully stopped — and count “one, two” before moving if it helps.

3. Speed Control Issues

Driving too fast or too slow is a common error. Some students rush, while others drive so cautiously that they disrupt traffic.

  • How to avoid it: Practice maintaining the posted speed limit. Use your mirrors to check flow and adjust smoothly without overreacting.

4. Poor Lane Changes

Last-minute signals or drifting into the next lane without proper checks can hurt your score. Examiners want smooth, controlled lane changes.

  • How to avoid it: Signal early, check mirrors, do a shoulder check, and change lanes gradually. Practice on Hamilton’s busier roads before test day.

5. Parking Mistakes

Parallel parking, reverse parking, or poor positioning during a three-point turn are common problem areas.

  • How to avoid it: Dedicate extra practice time to parking in different settings. Our instructors at SteerWise train students on Hamilton DriveTest Centre routes to build real confidence.

Practice Makes Perfect

Passing your G2 isn’t just about memorizing the rules it’s about making safe driving habits second nature. By avoiding these mistakes, you’ll not only impress your examiner but also become a safer driver on Hamilton roads.

At SteerWise Driving School, we specialize in preparing students for both G2 and full G tests. With structured lessons, patient instructors, and local test route practice, we make sure you’re ready when it counts.
